City Outskirts

Silo 5 was built in four stages, in 1906, 1913, 1924 and 1958, giving a glimpse into the evolution of the grain elevators and their building techniques and materials over five decades. In it’s high day the Silo 5 was one of the most important grain processing facilities in North America. Due to the changing world economy, activities in Silo 5 declined in the late 20th century, leading to complete cessation of all operations in 1994. In 2007, Canada Lands Company took possession of the Silo 5 complex and is researching into options for redevelopment of the building and the surrounding areas.
